As a young teen I was extremely disengaged in school, despite loving reading and learning. In hindsight, it turned out that gender dysphoria was the cause. I know this because the first month after I'd gotten my name changed in the system and changed classes (so no one had met me before, meaning no transition period where they had to learn my new name), I had a teacher tell me just how much change he'd seen. I was engaging with him, with the material, and with other students to a degree that genuinely surprised him.
Sometimes there's truly nothing you can do until the student decides to change their life.
